About Nikki

I use photography as a tool to engage with and participate in the world, as an aid to improve my awareness of self in relation to others. My photographic projects make me feel alive. I want to demonstrate what is possible – to effect positive transformation. We all have the same fundamental needs, desires and fears, and it is possible to triumph over difficulties in even the most apparently extreme circumstances.

This possibility for positive social transformation motivates my photography. I believe that the media tends to focus on and sensationalize negative reports. I understand these stories need to be told, but I would like to balance the equation by offering a sensitive insight into what can in fact be gained through apparent suffering. I want to inspire, to create awareness and a genuine sense of compassion by illustrating our common humanity forged in the trials and tribulations of daily existence. There is magic in life if we choose to see it, and I feel that we need to be shown this in order to challenge the habituated negative patterns and views that keep us from lasting, positive transformation both individually and collectively.

I have had my work featured in several publications and have exhibited widely.

» Africa United: the Road to Twenty Ten book (Kit Publishing).

» The Mama Bamba Way birthing book (Sharp Media).

» Women by Women photographic book (Wits University Press).

» Le Monde newspaper (France).

» Wall Street Journal newspaper (Asia).

» De Groene Amsterdammer magazine (Netherlands).

» Courrier International magazine (France).

> Vice Versa (Netherlands).

» Pix photographic magazine (South Africa).

» Sawubona – South African Airways inflight magazine.

» Explore South Africa magazine.

» The Big Issue magazine (South Africa).

» Shape magazine (South Africa).

» Discovery magazine (South Africa).

» Leadership magazine (South Africa).

» Cape Etc magazine (South Africa).

» Itch magazine (South Africa).

I am affiliated with the Africa Media Online photo library and agency. Awards I have won include the Tudor Sigma Documentary Photo Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2008, and second place for my entry in the Documentary Category of the Profoto Awards 2009. I was selected by the head of the European Press Photo Agency Germany and the head of Magnum Photos New York as an official member of the World Press Photo All Stars team for their project Twenty Ten; African media on the road to 2010 (and beyond), and subsequently went on to be chosen to join their Dream Team.

A selection of my images are available for viewing in the Features area of my website.

Prints of these works are available for sale (please email me for details)
