Omkareshwar by nikkirixon1

Omkareshwar is located on the banks of the Narmada river, one of India’s holy river. Pilgrims travel for miles to walk the parikrama around the Omkareshwar island.

Elim Night Shelter by nikkirixon1

I recently spent some time at the Elim Night Shelter in Elsie’s Rivier documenting some of the residents there. I was surprised to find many of those staying at the homeless shelter were white. It is a commonly held perception that it is only blacks/coloureds in South Africa who make up the homeless population, but with the change in economic climate this is also changing.

Sacred Fire by nikkirixon1

It is said that the sacred fire burning in one of the temples in Gangotri has been burning for thousands of years. Saddhus are tasked with the purpose of keeping the fire alight. Many Indians visit Gangotri on a pilgrimage every year during the summer season when the snows have receded enough to allow transport to reach the mountainous area.

A few images of my journey through India. We arrived during non-tourist season. We soon found out why it was non-tourist season…. In mid-summer the the temperatures can soar up to 50 degrees with up to 100 percent humidity. The locals know how to deal with that sort of heat – sleep!

Hot springs by nikkirixon1

Yamunotri Temple is nestle 3,300 metres high in the Himalayan Mountain range of Northern India. It is the start of the Yamuna (sister of Yama, the God of death) river. The pilgrims travel from all over India for days to reach Janki Chatti where they start the 7 kilometre hike moving up 1000 metres on the moutain. Pilgrims on foot are joined by wealthier travellers who make use of ponies and dandies to carry them up the mountain. When they reach the temple they bath in the natural hot springs which occurs there. They cook rice in the steaming hot water and offer it to the Gods.

Portraits by nikkirixon1

A few portraits I shot during my travels through India. What an amazing journey it was… There is never a dull moment in India – it is a photographers’ haven, a place of chaos, colours and beliefs so alien from the world I know. Such a busy place, but everyone still has time for each other… We were often invited into family homes for food – many people there have so little, but are so open to sharing what they have….
